Benaki Museum of Islamic Art

Housed in a gleaming white neoclassical mansion with a sweeping view of the Kerameikos cemetary, this newest annex of the Benaki museum provides a welcoming home to its extensive Islamic art collection (which is considered amongst the most important in the world). More than 8,000 pieces of art hail from regions as widely spread geographically as North Africa, India, Persia, Asia Minor, Arabia, Mesopotamia, and even Sicily and Spain. Among the ceramics, gold, metalwork, textiles, glass, funerary steles, and weaponry on display, a couple of exhibits really stand out: a set of carved wooden memorial door panels from 8th-century Mesopotamia, and the marble-faced interior of a reception room from a 17th-century Cairo mansion.
